BigCommerce - Install & Setup

A CereTax username/password and API Key is required to set up the CereTax for BigCommerce app. If you do not have a CereTax username/password or API Key, please reach out to support@ceretax.com.

If your BigCommerce products were configured for a different Tax Provider (ex. TaxJar, TaxCloud, Avalara, etc.) prior to using CereTax, they will need to be updated to use CereTax Tax Codes (PS Codes). Product Tax Codes can be updated individually or in bulk by following the steps under the Product Settings section on this guide.

Installing and setting up CereTax for BigCommerce

Installing CereTax

Follow the steps below to install the CereTax app.

1. In your BigCommerce dashboard, open the Settings page and select Tax under the Setup panel.

2. On the Tax page, select Add tax service.

3. Under All tax services, select Install in the CereTax panel. This will begin the installation process.

4. Confirm your intent to install the app by selecting the Install button.

5. Confirm CereTax can access your account data to complete the app installation.

CereTax App Set-up

After the CereTax app is installed, you will be redirected to the CereTax login page. Follow the steps below to set-up the CereTax app.

1. Enter your CereTax username and password and click Sign in.

2. Enter your CereTax API Key and click Use Key.

3. Make selections for the following settings and click Save:

  • Profile: select the CereTax profile you are connecting to your BigCommerce store.
  • Business Type: select the business type that best represents your business. RETAIL is the default.
  • Customer Type: select the customer type that best represents your customers. COMMERCIAL is the default.

Tax

Now that the CereTax app is installed and configured, there are tax settings in BigCommerce that need to be configured before you can begin calculating tax using CereTax.

1. From your BigCommerce dashboard, open the Settings page and select Tax under Setup.

2. Under Configured tax services > CereTax, click Enable and Confirm when prompted.

3. Under Configured Tax Services > CereTax, click Edit.

4. Under Provider targeting, select the countries or subdivisions you want CereTax to calculate tax in. Any countries or sub divisions not selected will use your basic tax settings when calculating tax.

5. Under Provider options, select or enter the following and click Save:

  • Please submit my order data so that I can use solution tax reporting and returns features: Check this box to submit committed or finalized transactions to CereTax so they can be used for reporting. Do not select this option if you do not wish for CereTax to store your committed or finalized transactions for reporting, or if another system will be posting finalized transactions to CereTax.
  • Handling code: This field is provided to add Taxability settings for any handling charges. Enter the following default value: true|D|C
  • Shipping code: This field is provided to add Taxability settings for any shipping charges. Enter the following default value: true|D|C
  • Default taxable code: This field is provided to add Taxability settings for your products.  Enter the following default value: 11010100

6. Within your BigCommerce store, navigate to Settings> Tax > Store tax settings and click Edit.

7. Within Store tax settings, scroll down to "Configure tax display settings" and make any necessary changes to the tax display settings.

  • BigCommerce gives you the option to display each tax rate individually in cart and checkout and on orders and invoices, or to show taxes as one summarized line item. Examples of both options are below.

7. If you choose to display tax as one summarized line item, a Tax label must be configured. The Tax label can be configured at the top of the Store tax settings page. If you chose to display each tax rate individually, the tax label will come from CereTax.

8. Under "Prices entered with tax", select No, I will enter prices exclusive of tax. The CereTax app currently only supports tax exclusive pricing. If you sell products with tax inclusive pricing, please reach out to CereTax at support@ceretax.com.

Product Settings

If you previously used another BigCommerce Tax Provider (ex. TaxJar, TaxCloud, Avalara, etc.) prior to using CereTax, the Tax Provider Tax Code field may be populated with the other provider's Tax Codes. These Tax Codes must be removed or updated to CereTax Tax Codes (PS Codes). Prior Tax Provider Tax Codes can be updated on individual product pages or bulk updated following the steps below.

Single product updates

CereTax PS Codes can be assigned to individual items directly in BigCommerce. To assign a PS Code to an individual Product, do the following:

1. From your BigCommerce dashboard, open the Products page.

2. Search for and select the Product you want to edit.

3. Navigate to the Pricing section of the product page.

4. Expand the "Show Advanced Pricing" to reveal the Tax Configuration section.

5. Enter a CereTax PS Code in the "Tax Provider Tax Code" box.

6. Save the product.

Bulk product updates

The Tax Provider Code on products can also be updated in bulk. To bulk update your products, do the following: 

1. From your BigCommerce dashboard, select Products > Export

2. On the "Export products" page, make the following selections and select Continue:

  • Template: Bulk Edit
  • File format: Export as csv

3. When prompted, click "Start export"

4. Open the exported product file and locate the "Tax Provider Tax Column". It should be column BP.

5. Add the applicable CereTax PS Code to each product using this column. The column may be

6. When you are finished updating your products, save the file.

7. From your BigCommerce dashboard, select Products > Import

8. On the "Import Products" page, do the following: 

  • Select the csv file with your CereTax PS Code assignments.
  • Check the box next to "File was exported using the 'Bulk Edit' template.
  • Maintain all other default selections under 'Import Options' unless any other selections are applicable to you.
  • Select Next

9. Select "Next" on the "Link Import Fields" page.

10. Select "Start import" on the next page.

After the import completes, your products will be updated with the assigned CereTax PS Code. This step can be repeated whenever necessary to bulk update new and existing products.

Customer Settings

If you sell to exempt customers, exemptions can be assigned to customers directly in BigCommerce. To assign exemptions to individual Customers, do the following:

1. From your BigCommerce dashboard, open the Customers page.

2. Search for and select the Customer you want to edit.

3. In the Customer details section, enter one of the applicable values from the list below in the "Tax exempt code" field:

  • FEDGOVT - Federal Government
  • STATEGOVT - State Government
  • TRIBGOVT - Tribal Government
  • CHARITABLE - Charitable/Exempt Organization
  • RELIGIOUS - Religious Organization
  • RESALE - Reseller
  • OTHER - Other/custom exemption

4. Save the customer.

Once you have configured your exemption codes and assigned them to customers, work with your implementation contact to set up exemption rules in CereTax for the exemption codes used.

Update CereTax credentials in BigCommerce

If the CereTax username and/or password you are using to connect CereTax and BigCommerce changes for any reason, you will need to update your CereTax credentials in BigCommerce.

1. From your BigCommerce dashboard, open the Settings page and select Tax under Setup.

2. Under Configured Tax Services > CereTax, click Edit.

3. Click on Update Connection.

4. Enter your CereTax username and password under "Update CereTax Connection" and then click "Update CereTax Connection". A confirmation message will display if the update was successful.
